The first "green" building at UCLA that meets stringent environmental guidelines was dedicated Friday. The three-story, 20,000-square-foot La Kretz Hall will be the first at UCLA to be accredited under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System, which certifies buildings that meet high environmental standards, according to UCLA.
Construction began in October 2004. Faculty and staff will start moving in later this month. The first classes will be held there when the fall academic term begins in September.
The building is made out of recycled materials and is energy efficient, officials said.
It was constructed on top of an existing 5-million gallon tank that supplies chilled water to UCLA's air-conditioning systems, saving space and avoiding the environmental impact of developing a new site, officials said.
The building will house several research and teaching programs, serve as a hub for undergraduate instruction and offer facilities for academic conferences. The third floor will house the offices of the Institute of the Environment.
