The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) recently announced that Taiwan has become its newest member and the latest nation to form a not-for-profit Green Building Council (GBC). Taiwan's GBC elected 21 board members, including President Chiang Pi-Hsiao.
Taiwan has been an active adopter of sustainable development initiatives for over 13 years, initiating many activities following the Earth Summit 1992, notes the organization.
In 2001, Taiwan successfully launched the 'Green Building Promotion Program' providing resources, research, guidance, training, and education to support the adoption of green building initiatives in Taiwan.
These activities lead to the adoption of mandatory green building design criteria for all new official central government buildings in 2002, and local government buildings in 2003. To date, they have more than 500 buildings having either received certification as green buildings or awaiting certification.
