Sprinklers Still Not in High-rise Plan

Chicago could soon require glow-in-the-dark reflectors in the stairwells of high-rise buildings among new fire safety regulations adopted after last year's fatal blaze at the Cook County Administration Building.

Chicago could soon require glow-in-the-dark reflectors in the stairwells of high-rise buildings among new fire safety regulations adopted after last year's fatal blaze at the Cook County Administration Building.

But the City Council's Buildings Committee again stopped short Monday of recommending ordinances requiring sprinklers in all high-rise office towers and greater safety measures in tall residential buildings.

All high-rises that are not equipped with an emergency back-up generator would have to provide exit path markings that are "photo-luminescent."

Ald. Bernard Stone (50th), the committee's chairman, predicted committee approval within a week, which would clear the way for a final council vote Dec. 1.

Chris Bushell, first deputy director of the city's Department of Construction and Permits, said the Daley administration is still considering several changes to the proposed ordinance calling for safety upgrades in older residential buildings.
