An expanded mission has led the Roof Consultants Institute will merge with the Building Envelope Institute, the groups have announced.

The move comes after the board for RCI adopted a proposal to expand the membership services dto include waterproofing and the building envelope. According to the organization's President, Gary Cattel, RRC, PE, this action reflects the recognition that many Institute members have expanded their service areas beyond the roof and are involved in other areas of the building enclosure.

This change includes an agreement with the directors of the Building Envelope Institute (BEI) to merge BEI into the Roof Consultants Institute and provide membership services to BEI members. The two organizations have previously shared management and administration and co-sponsored a Building Envelope Symposium in Chicago, Illinois in November 2005.

To complement the organizational change, the RCI board has adopted a new mission statement and strategic plan to meet the needs of its growing membership base, officials saidd.

As a result of these actions, the board also decided to change its name to RCI, Inc., The Institute of Roofing, Waterproofing, & Building Envelope Professionals.

The Roof Consultants Institute was formed in 1983 to represent the interests and values of the roof consulting profession; to provide for the professional development of its members; to convey the consultant's perspective to the roofing industry and the public; and, to support professionalism, ethical behavior, education, and research in the roofing industry.

RCI Inc. will pursue the same objectives with respect to waterproofing and the building envelope, officials said.
