Fortune 500 grocery chain Supervalu has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star designation for more than 100 of its corporate retail grocery stores.
Supervalu ranks in the top 21 percent of the grocery industry in terms of efficient energy management, thanks to its focus on energy efficiency in the design and operation of its retail stores. The stores operate with a combined annual energy reduction of approximately 339 million kBtu, which equates to an environmental carbon dioxide emission reduction of more than 54,000 metric tons. This decrease in emissions has the same environmental greenhouse gas impact as removing 11,827 cars from the road for one year, or providing 7,014 American households their electricity use for the same period.
The company says it continues to focus on energy efficiency through an ongoing series of energy-related initiatives, with a goal to further reduce electrical energy usage by an additional 418 million kBtu's annually for its retail stores.
In addition to managing the energy usage of its more than 1,500 retail stores, 24 distribution centers and corporate offices, Supervalu also offers its energy-management best practices to more than 4,500 independent supermarkets and retail customers throughout the United States.
