LA School Buildings on Earthquake Fault to Be Removed

Six buildings of a West Los Angeles high school will be removed after studies showed they were built above an earthquake fault.
Seismic studies conducted in April indicated the gymnasium, music building and four portable classrooms at University High School lie above the Santa Monica fault, said Roy Romer, superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
School officials said the study also showed that five other schools were built above earthquake faults but additional studies are needed to help determine whether they will be removed.
Romer said there is no immediate danger to students of University High, which is located on the city's west side, near the University of California, Los Angeles.
Planning has begun for construction of a new music building, which was vacated after the study found it is the most earthquake-vulnerable of the six structures.
