The Houston City Council has become the first city in the nation to pass an ordinance that would notify a building owner when a third party accesses their building or construction plans, BOMA International reports.

The ordinance was meant to increase building safety and security, BOMA says.

According to the proposal, a building owner or their representative will be notified each time a request is made to access their building’s structural plans upon registration in the two-year program and payment of a nominal administrative fee.

BOMA is hoping the programwill be emulated in municipalities nationwide. Houston BOMA’s Legislative Advocacy Committee and staff worked with City Council member Adrian Garcia for over a year in developing the ordinance, BOMA says.
