When the U.S. headquarters of one international financial institution experienced a failure in their uninterruptible power supply system, it left the company skeptical of its current UPS system reliability. They were ready to try something new.
Because they needed to maintain 100 percent uptime during the UPS replacement at their 250,000-square-foot Midwest headquarters, they couldn’t swap the new UPS system into the existing UPS room and battery room. Instead, a new room had to be constructed within the existing square footage currently intended for revenue-producing staff. Minimizing the size of the new room was a must. Installing LI versus VRLA batteries allowed the company to construct a single 1,000-square-foot room vs. multiple rooms totaling 1,500 square feet. The major square foot savings stems from the LI batteries being located adjacent to the UPS.
Square footage was just the beginning of the savings. Estimated construction cost savings are as follows:
• Construction of separate battery room with dedicated AC unit: $15,000 to $25,000
• Battery room exhaust system: $10,000 to $15,000
• Structural reinforcement: $15,000 to $25,000
Beyond initial space savings, repurposing the existing UPS and battery rooms as support space freed up more space for revenue-producing staff.
Installing lithium-ion batteries instead of the traditional VRLA allowed one Midwestern company to construct a single 1,000-square-foot room instead of multiple rooms totaling 1,500 square feet. The reason for the reduced footprint is that the LI batteries could be located adjacent to the UPS.
