A Future-Ready Upgrade for the Brooklyn STEAM Center

Six new adaptable classrooms, student-guided design and facility-friendly features reshape the expanded center.

The Brooklyn STEAM Center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is expanding what career and technical education can look like. The project introduces six new classrooms that support pathways ranging from cybersecurity and game design to construction technology. Each classroom is designed to be both standardized and highly adaptable: storage along the perimeter stays fixed, while central furniture and equipment can be rearranged as needed. Power and data pulled into the middle of the room allow layouts to change without opening walls or relying on perimeter outlets.

Students played a key role in shaping the expansion. Through visioning sessions and design charrettes, juniors and seniors helped guide decisions that led to calmer breakout areas and lounges, supporting smoother student flow and giving learners places to focus between classes.

Across every classroom, flexible teaching modes are supported through whiteboards, pin-up walls, smart displays and wireless connectivity. Extra power and data were incorporated early, ensuring that future devices can be added without invasive retrofits. For facilities teams, the result is a space that is easy to clean today and ready to evolve tomorrow.
