What are some of the most important technological advances in roofing over the last several years?
The significant increases in the use of photovoltaics (PV) in the United States is impressive and “on the surface” appears to be very environmentally friendly but we need to ensure that the incorporation of the PV systems does not significantly affect the performance of the roof system (we still need to keep the water out) and the ability to inspect and maintain the roof. Although not necessarily a technological advancement, the true performance of various roofing materials and systems due to their having been “in place” for over seven years has provided “real world” feedback. The research programs that monitor “in place” systems long-term provide a true test to the technological advancements in our industry. No laboratory test or warranty covers what Mother Nature subjects these systems to.
