Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Sprinkler Systems

Facilities managers are accountable for NFPA 25 compliance and must build the technical knowledge to distinguish inspection, testing and maintenance in order to address issues before they lead to safety risks, fatalities or legal consequences.


In his presentation at NFMT East, John Denhardt pointed to incidents where system failures — often tied to overlooked maintenance requirements — resulted in fatalities and legal consequences. While contractors perform inspections, the ultimate responsibility for compliance rests with the property owner or their representative. Denhardt stressed that facilities managers must understand the difference between inspection (a visual check), testing (functional verification) and maintenance (repair and upkeep) to ensure systems meet regulatory expectations.
