Petainer Launches BPA-Free Water Cooler Container As "Tide Turns" Against Toxic Compound

Demand for water cooler containers that are 100% free of BPA is set to increase sharply in the wake of rising health concerns and changes to safety regulations, according to leading supplier Petainer.

Petainer, which is based in the UK and has a global distribution network, has just launched the BPA-free PetainerCooler™ – a completely safe, PET water cooler container that is lightweight, returnable, refillable and recyclable - unlike most water coolers used in the industry currently, which are made of polypropylene.

BPA, or bisphenol A, is a synthetic compound commonly found in plastic packaging.  Although valued for its clarity and strength, it has been in the news in recent years because of mounting evidence that it can have a range of harmful health effects, including cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

France has already moved to ban BPA from food and beverage packaging from January 2015, and it is widely expected that many other countries will follow suit.  Meanwhile, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is due to publish an eagerly-awaited scientific opinion shortly on the use of BPA in food contact materials.

Annemieke Hartman-Jemmett, Strategy Director at Petainer, said: “The tide is turning against the use of BPA in the food and beverage industry.  Regulators and EFSA’s scientists can no longer ignore the mounting evidence that BPA is harmful to health, and we therefore believe that it’s only a matter of time before PET water coolers with zero BPA are selected over other products globally.”

She continued: “Innovation through using proven safe materials is Petainer’s top priority, so we decided to pre-empt regulatory changes and develop our own, healthier BPA-free water cooler container ¬– the PetainerCooler.  This means our customers can act now and eliminate BPA from their water cooler systems without delay.”

Available with or without handles, the PetainerCooler™ has standard fittings so it will work with most water cooler systems.  It is also backed by a 100% taste guarantee.

Annemieke Hartman-Jemmett added: “The PetainerCooler™ offers our customers market-leading performance without the harmful effects of BPA in a way that is highly cost effective and kinder to the environment.  It’s a great example of Petainer’s Drinkinventiveness™ – our ability to solve complex drink supply challenges simply and profitably.”
