DESCRIPTION: The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) is seeking an experienced, innovative Facilities Manager who is skilled in overseeing facility operations in an organization with multiple stakeholders, collaborative and thoughtful as a project manager, and creative in their stewardship for managing site resources.

Founded in 1849 and headquartered in St. Paul, MNHS is America’s largest state historical society with a national reputation for being a leader in using the power of history to transform lives. MNHS plays an import role in our state`s historic preservation, education and tourism; and provides the public with award-winning programs, exhibitions and events.

The Facilities Manager is responsible for providing overall leadership in the facilities management and oversight of the History Center and 10 acres of grounds. As a true Minnesota icon, the History Center was built from the state’s natural resources and designed to reflect the diverse people and experiences of the state. Opened in 1992, the 479,080 square feet building is not only a public museum, repository for state collections, and event space, but also home to around 350 staff responsible for preservation, programming, outreach, research, and administration. The building is owned by the State of Minnesota and leased by MNHS.

Success in this role will require a creative and collaborative mindset with skills in project management, customer service, design (with emphasis on finishes), and budget management. The Facilities Manager should have an awareness of museum management standards and collection management principles, have experience with security practices and equipment, as well as a willingness to take initiative and build relationships with state and community partners. This position is part of a facilities management team that provides facilities and risk management oversight to all MNHS properties throughout the state.

SUMMARY OF WORK: 1) plan and manage renovations, improvements, and repairs to the MHC building and its 10 acres of grounds; 2) manage MHC Facilities program, long-term strategies and work plans; 3) manage MHC Facilities daily program area operations; and 4) provide overall direction for hiring, training, supervision, and motivation for staff, interns, and volunteers and ensures overall compliance with MNHS policies and procedures.


• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, property management, construction management or a related field plus eight years facilities management experience or equivalent OR an advanced degree plus six years facilities management experience or equivalent.

• Knowledge of building components, related mechanical systems, building codes, construction methods, architectural and engineering principles.

• Strong human relations, personnel management, accounting, leadership, and contracting skills.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently, and be self-motivated.

• Strong project management skills.

• Demonstrated ability to think imaginatively and problem solve.

• Familiarity with museum principles and standards.

• Knowledge of security practices and equipment.

• Strong eye for design concepts, especially with finishes to complete an overall design.

• Superior customer service skills and ability to work with a diverse clientele.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing, by phone and in person.

• Demonstrated proficiency working with Microsoft Office systems, Internet, databases, spreadsheets, schedules, and project management software.

• Ability to work flexible hours and be on call.

• Ability to lift 25 pounds.


• Project Management certification.

• Knowledge and understanding of Society policies & procedures.

• Demonstrated ability to develop technical specifications, cost estimates and requests for proposals for building projects.

• Demonstrated ability to review and approve project proposals, to evaluate and critically appraise work in progress, to identify the need for corrective actions and to recommend acceptance of contract work.

• Knowledge of standards in care of historic collections.
