New commercial construction in Los Angeles must include electric water heaters, furnaces and appliances after the city council voted to ban gas appliances in new construction, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Los Angeles joins 50 cities and counties in California to adopt similar rules banning gas hookups, putting the city “in line with climate leaders across the country,” according to one council member.
The motion requires that new construction is emission free and likely to take effect sometime during the next few years. City agencies have been directed to draft a regulation for the council to approve by the end of the year.
The article states that natural gas burned in businesses and homes accounts for 10 percent of the state’s pollution. Los Angeles has a goal of achieving 100 percent clean energy by 2035.
