“Warmer downtown” is a common summer weather report. The replacement of natural vegetation with impermeable surfaces has caused cities to become giant heat sinks with nowhere for water runoff to go but into the overtaxed sewer system. So, many cities are actively promoting the idea of replacing what constitutes large areas of their hard surfaces – rooftops – with vegetation.
