The International Code Council (ICC)'s 2012 edition of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is under final consideration and includes an outcome-based compliance method that is an alternative option to prescriptive or modeled performance compliance.  A broad-based coalition has submitted a public comment to ensure the 2012 IgCC provides a fully functional outcome-based compliance path based on actual building energy performance.  

 

The Details 

The American Institute of Architects (AIA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), New Buildings Institute (NBI), the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) worked together to prepare public comments (GEW36-11 and GEW296-11) that, if approved, will offer an optional outcome-based compliance path to facilitate both innovation in design and simplify the task of verifying code compliance.

 

This new path would:

allow owners and developers to comply with the energy provisions of the IgCC by demonstrating actual energy performance of a building;

advance the application of proven, but more innovative design strategies and technologies without the time and cost of obtaining a code variance; 

provide a set of specific energy performance targets for eight building types in 16 different climate zones; and

provide an optional compliance alternative for jurisdictions that choose to adopt this path, allowing greater opportunities for innovation and simpler compliance verification.  

This comment will be acted upon by ICC voting members at the IgCC Final Action Hearings to be held in Phoenix, AZ from November 2 through 6, 2011.
