Water Cooling and the Data Center: Don’t forget the UPS
time 1:32
RELATED CONTENT:
When it comes to data centers, many people consider water cooling to be a mortal sin. But with the extra density that comes from today's blade servers, the alternatives are getting scarce.
But water cooling comes with challenges of its own. For example, in row cooling units that run on water will need to be added to the UPS system. Otherwise, the UPS system could provide backup power for 15 minutes even though the servers will go into thermal overload in less time because there is no cooling. That short circuits reliability. Adding connections for backup power to the in-row cooling units will double the number of connections that need to be made. But it will significantly boost reliability.
