Proper Storage of Building Supplies for Good IAQ

Don’t use mechanical rooms for storage of building supplies and chemicals. Doing so could hurt your facility’s indoor air quality.

Mechanical rooms often act as mixing-air plenums for return and outside air and are part of the ventilation air stream. Building materials such as ceiling tiles, paints and carpets, and cleaning supplies can be a source of odors, dust particulate and volatile organic compounds.

If these materials are stored in a mechanical room, spilling or moving them will create dust and odors that can contaminate the supply air stream. Instead, these materials should be stored in a location that has local exhaust, away from outdoor air intakes.
