New Space May Be an Excuse for a Party – Literally

I’m Ed Sullivan, editor of Building Operating Management magazine. Today’s topic is what to do the day occupants move into renovated office space.

Move-in day is a big event, whether the space is very large or fairly small. For you, it means the end of a project, maybe one that’s consumed nights as well as days for weeks, maybe months.

But for occupants, it means even more. They’re moving into what is literally a new home. After all, during weekdays they will be spending more time in that space than in their own houses.

That in itself is reason to throw a party for them. But your objective is more than housewarming. You want to be sure that they like the new space. That’s especially true if the new workstations are smaller than the old ones.

A party is a chance to talk up all the good features of the new space. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to educate people about things like adjusting the new chairs or using the new phones. What’s more, it’s a good time to fix things that might not be working just right.

Like any successful party, this one takes planning. Make sure you have enough staff available to handle questions and work that needs to be done. That may mean inviting in people from the furniture contractor, for example, to help. And be sure that the staff is familiar enough with the new space to answer questions and counter objections.

All in all, a party can be a good way to help ensure that occupants are happy and productive in their new spaces.
