Mold In Electrical Equipment

  May 16, 2008

The many places in facilities just perfect for growing mold make it a significant enemy of good indoor air quality. One surprising area not to overlook for potential mold is electrical equipment, fixtures and cable.

Take a close look at the areas surrounding electrical switches, outlets mounted on exterior walls and ceiling-mounted lighting fixtures that are directly beneath unheated spaces. Infiltration of moist, warm air through gaps between these electrical items and the wall or ceiling can create areas that promote the growth of mold. Mold can also grow within electrical conduit, particularly if the conduit has been flooded.

If mold is found in these areas, check the HVAC and exhaust systems to make certain that they are not putting the building interior into negative pressure, which will significantly increase infiltration rates. Caulk and seal areas around electrical outlets to eliminate gaps that allow air and moisture to enter the building space. Lastly, any source of water infiltration should be eliminated.
