Avoid Common Security Audit Mistakes
April 24, 2009
Security audits are a critical ‹ and ongoing ‹ need for some facilities. Yet
security audits are often either ignored completely, or only done once, even
though a facilities occupancy may change.
There are several reasons a security audit may be forgotten. In some cases,
staff may simply review what kind of security comparable facilities have in
place. For example, in a school setting, staff should be aware of the
increased focus on perimeter security.
Another possibility is that staff may seek the guidance of the police
department instead of doing a formal security audit. But while the
information can be useful, the role of police is law enforcement, not
building security, a key difference.
It can be helpful to know what other comparable facilities are doing, just
as the advice of local law enforcement can be valuable. But neither is a
substitute for a regular security audit. Without one, security breaches can
lead to knee-jerk responses over the years, rather than a comprehensive
plan.
