Sustainability Stars: Facelift Brings Recognition to Oak Ridge National Laboratorytest

Oak Ridge (Tenn.) National Laboratory bought fully into the sustainability movement in the mid-2000s and has never slowed down.

A recent $750 million modernization of the facility, built during World War II, focused on improving building efficiency, reducing water use and implementing green purchasing and recycling programs. The improvements helped the laboratory reduce water use by 25 percent and overall energy use by 36 percent.

The efforts helped Oak Ridge National Laboratory earn a 2016 Facility Maintenance Decisions Achievement Award for Sustainability.
