The debate rages on among maintenance and engineering managers regarding the use of outsourcing in institutional and commercial facilities, but many managers say they are satisfied with their outsourcing experiences, according to a new survey.

The level of satisfaction with the process surprised Michael Cowley, the president of CE Maintenance Solutions, a facilities maintenance and management-consulting firm.

"From my experiences, the room is split right down the middle," he says. "The ones that like outsourcing typically have good vendors and contractors to work with, and they've got a pretty decent cost structure. The ones that aren't happy with it typically it was forced on them, and the (departments) lost their power. They're not happy with the contractors they have doing the work."
