Sustainable IAQ: Make Money, Protect the Environment, Satisfy Occupants

By Tabitha Goodman
July 2008

A prime example of the relationship between IAQ and sustainability comes through understanding the triple bottom line.

The concept of the triple bottom line refers to three factors foremost in the minds of most successful organizations. The traditional bottom line focuses solely on money. But smart businesses figured out a long time ago that a second factor, satisfied employees and customers, make it much easier to improve the bottom line. The third factor of the triple bottom line, environmental protection, has become popular only recently.

Now, it is impossible to operate a smart, sustainable business without constantly worrying about how any decision or action will affect the bank account, the people who live or work in a building, and the environment.

IAQ is a tremendous example of the triple bottom line at work. By promoting cleaner indoor air, managers are improving the environment while providing healthier air for building occupants. For building owners, this strategy quickly translates to increased property value. For managers, this translates to higher employee satisfaction and retention.
