GSA Revs Up Stimulus Spending

By Brandon Lorenz, Senior Editor - June 2009

Meanwhile, the General Services Administration is beginning to spend the $6 billion it was given in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Most of the money is dedicated to greening the Federal building inventory. The remainder is dedicated to repairs.

GSA has identified 43 buildings that will receive $3.2 million in funding for full and partial high performance green building modernizations. Projects vary from building to building.

GSA has identified another $804 million in 194 limited scope projects. Buildings for limited scope upgrades will get advanced metering, among other upgrades. Those in need of roof replacement will get a PV roof, a vegetative roof, or a reflective roof, depending on the location of the facility. Other measures include commissioning, lighting improvements, HVAC retrofits and adding renewable energy generation.

Though deprived of $14 billion in the negotiations to get the stimulus bill passed, schools could yet see a boost in funding.

H.R.2187, the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act, passed the House May 14 by a vote of 275-155.

Authored by Rep. Ben Chandler (D-KY), the bill dedicates $6.4 billion in federal grants to the states in 2010 for school modernization and repair.

Half of the money states receive is earmarked for projects that follow the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program, Energy Star, Green Globes or the Collaborative for High Performance Schools.
