Audio/Video Equipment Can Now Earn the Energy Star

November 2009 - Energy Efficiency

All audio/video (AV) products that offer audio amplification or removable disc playback, such as CD, DVD and Blu-ray are now eligible to earn the Energy Star. The Version 2.0 Energy Star specification for AV products was finalized on November 16.

The new specification establishes on mode and low-power sleep mode power consumption limits and auto power down requirements that AV products must meet in order to earn the Energy Star label.

Energy Star-qualified AV products that meet the new requirements are designed to use up to 60 percent less energy than standard models.

Products previously excluded from earning the Energy Star, such as commercial audio amplifiers and docking stations, are eligible to qualify under the new requirements effective immediately.

Consumer AV products covered under Version 1.0 Audio/DVD program, including audio amplifiers, AV receivers, Shelf systems, DVD Players, and Blu-ray Disc players will be subject to these new requirements on July 30, 2010.
