CURRENT PROJECTS

Radisson Hotel Grand Rapids Riverfront Selects CuraFlo for Water Infrastructure Restoration Project

The seven-story, 170-room hotel has a plumbing system comprised of galvanized piping. Guests have frequently complained of low water flow and pressure in its hot supply lines due to tuberculation, a mineral scale build-up within the interior of the pipe. CuraFlo’s proprietary process will eliminate the scale and increase both water flow and water pressure throughout the hotel, as well as prevent future leaks and corrosion.

MEET THE CURAFLO TEAM

Skip Wolfe, Vice President Sales and Marketing

Have you always been involved in the water industry?

I started in the water industry as a mechanical engineer right of college designing large-scale municipal filtration equipment, and then spent the next 16 years in water industry. During that time, I have been involved with municipal, industrial, and commercial water treatment and water infrastructure rehabilitation both from an engineering and sales and marketing aspect.

As head of CuraFlo sales and marketing, what is the best aspect of your job?

The most enjoyable is certainly helping frustrated property owners. Whether it is an apartment owner, facility manager, or maintenance supervisor, by the time they talk to us they are usually fairly desperate for a solution. It is extremely satisfying to be able help them find a solution that permanently fixes their problem.

What is the most unusual occurrence, on the jobsite, that you’ve seen in your time at CuraFlo?

I was doing a walkthrough of 17 story high-rise apartment building that was having a lot of problems with leaks. The maintenance supervisor popped loose a ceiling tile to show us a problem area and I saw that he had a 5 gallon bucket hung up with some wire to catch water from a troublesome leak. The leak was so persistent, that the maintenance guy had permanently installed a spigot in the bucket so he could empty it without having to lug it down the ladder. I don’t know what surprised me more; his creativity or the fact that he was resigned to the fact the leak was here to stay.

What’s great about epoxy lining?

Epoxy lining has a lot of benefits, such as cost effectiveness and the minimal disruption. One of the benefits that I really like is its sustainable nature. Epoxy lining gives new life to a plumbing system and eliminates the need to scrap literally tons of copper or galvanized piping. The “green” aspects of this are tremendous and range from eliminating scrap to reducing the demand for new copper pipe. There is a very large aging piping infrastructure in commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings throughout the US that is going to need to be either replaced or rehabilitated over the next 10-15 years. There is a significant environmental impact of tearing out and replacing all of that piping, so there is conversely very positive environmental benefit to technologies that allow us to reuse rather than replace the piping.

When you are not thinking about water, what do you do to keep yourself busy?

I’m sure it goes hand in hand with being a mechanical engineer, but I am a huge gearhead. I love tinkering with anything that has a motor and spend way too much time in the garage working on cars. My wife gave up all hope of me spending more time in the house with the family when I installed a TV in the garage so I could watch car racing while working on cars!
