Facility maintenance and engineering in higher education is the only career Ellen Newell has known.

She started with the Utah State grounds department upon graduation, moving up through the ranks to the position of department manager.

These days, Newell is responsible for the grounds services, arboretum and zero-waste departments at Arizona State, where she focuses on sustainability in operations and meeting zero-waste goals.
