CSI’s New UniFormat Version Open for Public Comment

April 2008 - Design & Construction

The first draft of a revision to the 1998 version of UniFormat has been released for public comment. The UniFormat Task Team will consider all comments received before June 15, 2008, says the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI).

A revised version of UniFormat is planned for the end of 2008. This revision will be coordinated with MasterFormat 2004, but will only cover building construction topics. The following year, the task team will work to expand UniFormat subject matter to cover all types of construction, says CSI.

UniFormat provides a uniform classification system for organizing construction information into a standard order, based around functional elements. Using UniFormat can also provide consistent comparable data across an entire building life cycle, says CSI.

The 2010 edition of UniFormat is now available (http://www.csinet.org/Main-Menu-Category/CSI-Store/6/35152343-f0b4-df11-8ffb-0019b9e160b2.aspx)

The 2010 edition of UniFormat is the result of five years development effort, including five workshops and commentary on three public drafts, resulting in a major enhancement and improvement to the 1998 edition. Changes to the 2010 edition of UniFormat include:
•Revising UniFormat to increase its usefulness for classifying information for new applications such as Building Information Modeling (BIM).
•Changing the title of the introductory element from “Project Description” to “Introduction” and added additional material on project criteria and owner’s development activities.
•Moving stairs from Category C Interiors to B Shell.
•Reorganizing Category D Services to reflect more of a systems approach with generic functional categories.
•Providing standardized numbers for Level 4 titles throughout UniFormat.
•Adding example performance requirements to many functional elements.
•Separating Related Activities from physical elements in the A Substructure and G Sitework elements. These activities may be included with functional elements as appropriate.
•Placing supplementary components for many functional elements into separate categories to avoid repeating them with each functional element. The Supplementary Components are intended to be included with each functional element in that category as appropriate.

The UniFormat 2010 edition includes the following documents:
•A searchable pdf of the full UniFormat document, including added descriptive information for titles and an index.
•A full listing of the UniFormat numbers and titles as an Excel spreadsheet for import into databases and other applications
•A transition matrix between CSI/CSC UniFormat 2010 edition, CSI/CSC UniFormat 1998 edition, ASTM UNIFORMAT II, GSA UNIFORMAT, and NAVFAC UNIFORMAT.
