Fire Safety

For most facility executives, it's hard to imagine a more troubling scenario than the prospect of a fire in a mission critical facility like a data center. The good news is that facility executives can take a number of steps to reduce the risk.

To begin, consider site selection. Proper site selection is a major way to manage risk. For example - earthquake prone areas and locations where tornadoes and hurricanes are common is one area to avoid. Avoiding these types of locations will help reduce direct fire risks and those associated with secondary events, such as gas-line breaks, as well as the risks associated with power failures.

Another consideration is simple but important: The closer a data center is to a fire department, the faster a fire department can respond.
